Folding bikes are becoming increasingly popular these days. It offers all the benefits of a regular bike, but folding bikes are specifically designed to take care of your transport and storage problems as you can carry them with ease and store them neatly almost anywhere.Back then, folding bikes were heavy, crude and slow to fold. Now, lightweight folding bikes are widely available. They are lightweight and compact enough to store in a car, to carry on a train and to pack in a suitcase every time you fly.

Early beginning

The very first folding bike was invented by an Englishman named William Grout in 1878. His portable bike was a penny-farthing design in which it has an overly large front wheel and a small rear wheel. Technically, his bike is not actually folded, it was disassembled. Its frame can be disassembled so that it can be transported or stored conveniently as compared to a regular bike. Based on these characteristics, his prototype was considered as the world’s very first folding bike.

In December 26, 1893, a patent was filed for a folding bike that actually can be folded without disassembling by an American, Michael B. Ryan. By April 17, 1894, his work was issued as patent number 518, 330 by the U.S. patent office. An excerpt from the statement of purpose of the patent reads: “The principle object of my present invention is to produce a bicycle, so constructed that it can be easily folded and thus take up less space in length when not in use or when transported or stored.”

Why Use Folding Bikes?

Folding bikes are easy to operate and convenient to use. The main feature of a folding bike is portability. You can put it in the trunk of your automobile or take it on public transport, on buses or trains easily. It is also the most cost effective means of transportationif you want to commute to work. You can virtually store or tuck it anywhere. They are space-saving at home and elsewhere.

In addition, folding bikes are good investments. You don’t have to worry about parking spaces and parking fees. No need to worry about fuel cost or oil changes. Just imagine how much an average car owner spends on maintenance and gas. Folding bikes are definitely low maintenance. You just have to make sure that the tires are pumped up and the brakes are in good condition. They are also relatively thief proof, as you don’t have to lock it up on the street, you can just carry and store them anywhere. Using folding bikes are definitely economical and good for the environment too. No more fossil fuel to burn that can pollute the environment.

Folding bikes are good for leisure and commuting purposes. This is especially true for tourists. You can literally enjoy your vacation, exploring the wonders of another city or country at your own pace. With a folding bike you can be on your way, you can easily maneuver your way through traffic. Lastly, riding a bike is good for your health. It provides a low-impact workout and an excellent cardiovascular exercise. Folding bikes are economical, healthy and fun.

Mountain bicycles (also known as all-terrain bicycles) are best for off-road cycling and terrain biking. They are designed to withstand the gruel some obstacles of dirt trails and other unpaved surfaces with uneven and bumpy areas. To ensure proper traction and appropriate shock absorption, mountain bicycles have broad knobby tires. In recent models of a mountain bicycle, a full front and rear suspension is becoming popular for a better ride on such unfriendly terrain.

Parts of a Mountain Bicycle

Wheels. The size of the knobby tires of a mountain bicycle range from 26 to 29 inches, perfect for mountain biking. They offer optimum grip and traction on a variety of surface like dirt, gravel, rock and sand. Due to greater volume, there is less tire pressure on mountain bicycles as compared to other bicycles. And to handle the rough ride, the rims and spokes of these bicycles are very strong and durable.

Frames. There are 4 basic types of frames for a mountain bicycle. First on the line is steel. Bike frames made from steel are the cheapest, they are quite strong and durable but the problem is they are quite heavy and prone to rust. Second on the line is aluminum. Remember, as the materials get more advanced, so is the price. Bike frames made from aluminum are lighter but relatively strong and rust-proof, however, when subjected to repeated stress, they can become prone to breakage. The third are carbon fiber frames, which are very strong, rust-proof and light. Unfortunately, they are also prone to breakage when subjected to repeated stress over time. And lastly, the most expensive bike frames are made from titanium. They offer the best quality among other bike frames; they are super lightweight and incredibly strong. Bike frames made from titanium is the best choice for serious riders who often join competitive events.

Handlebars & Gears. Flat bars are the standard handlebar for mountains bicycles. Nearly a straight tube, the handlebar allows the rider to sit upright for a better control of the bike and vision for the road. And when it comes to gears, a mountain bicycle can have up to 27 possible gear combinations. They have two or three different-sized sprockets in the front along with eight or nine gears in the back. The gears will ensure that the bike is virtually ready for any type of terrain.

Pedals. When it comes to bike pedals, most mountain bicycles have platform bike pedals. Pedaling efficiency is compromised but platform pedals becomes very useful during technical climbs. This type of pedal enables the rider instant removal of the foot from the pedal anytime the rider wants, anytime the rider needs to.

Accessories. There are a lot of accessories for a mountain bicycle, all of which can be find useful. Protective gears and mountain biking apparels are important. Bike helmets, bike shorts and shirts, bike gloves, cycling shoes and sunglasses all offer both comfort and protection for the rider. Water bottle and hydration backpacks keep the rider hydrated at all times. Also available are tool kits, mini-pumps and extra tire tubes for a safe and spontaneous ride.

Bicycles were first introduced to the general public in the 1800s. Since then, they have been the most popular self propelled vehicle in the whole world. Not long ago, bicycles are all single speed bikes. Wherein there is a constant relationship between the rates at which the rider’s leg turn compared to the rates at which the wheels turn. In short, the gear ratio is fixed.

Single speed bikes, as the name suggests, have only one speed. There are no gears to shift because there is only one sprocket on the rear wheel and one on the pedal crank. The two sprockets are linked with a single roller chain. Basically, the frames of single speed bikes simply rely on a single-speed hub.

Now, let us talk about the distinct advantages of using single speed bikes.

Weight. Compared over the more complex multi-gear bikes, single speed bikes are generally light and easier to handle. The lightweight property is due to the absence of derailleurs and hub gears. Being light, single speed bikes are easier to maneuver and carry around. In addition, some parts of the bike can be made stronger without compromising the weight.

Cost. These bikes are light in weight and light on the pocket as well. As compare to their multi-geared counterparts, single speed bikes are significantly cheaper. You can either assemble one or buy one, either way; these bikes are proven light on the pocket.

Maintenance. With fewer components to deal with, the lower maintenance needed. Less accessories literally means less maintenance because with less things to break, there are less things to fix. It’s a good thing that single speed bikes have no derailluers and chain rings, because when they break, they are quite expensive items to replace. The drive chain of single speed bikes can withstand unfavorable conditions unlike their geared counterparts. That’s why many riders prefer the single speed over the geared ones especially during winter. The fixed gear is suitable for riding on wet or icy conditions because with lesser components, there is less potential for your bike to get jammed or clogged.

Drive Train Efficiency. The drive train efficiency of a single speed bike is significantly better as compared to its counterparts. Without the derailleur, the drag in the chain system is reduced. Efficiency is greatly improved due to the reduced drag, the straight chain line and the lack of chain rings.

Exercise Potential. Single speed bikes can give you a better workout as compared to multi-geared bikes. Using the geared ones, you can adjust the gears as you climb a hill or go down a slope. But with single speed bikes, you don’t have that option. You have to rely on the strength of your legs, thus giving you a more challenging workout. You might even get off your bike and walk as you climb really steep hills.

However, there are also some disadvantages of using single speed bikes. They are less versatile due to inability to shift gears. Single speed bikes are also slower than its counterpart. The multi-geared bikes are also ideal for an easy riding up and down steep hills and mountain biking.

Cycling is both fun and healthy. But there will be times that cycling outdoors is rather inappropriate and impossible. Under extreme weather conditions, whether hot, cold or wet, cycling outdoors is not an option. In addition, if your only time to cycle is at night, cycling outdoors is not commendable. Good thing there are indoor cycling bikes which you can use anytime you want to.

As people have become more health conscious these days, a regular exercise proves to be the most effective to stay fit and healthy. A regular exercise that makes us active and stay in shape. Using indoor cycling bikes is one of the best exercises you can do on a regular basis. You have the option to use those indoor cycling bikes at your local gym, or you may opt to purchase one to use at the privacy of your home.

Indoor cycling bikes are specifically designed in such a way that you get all the health benefits your regular bikes have to offer. These bikes remain stationary, so using them is the safest way to get in shape at the comfort of your own home or at the convenience of your local gym.

History of Indoor Cycling Bikes

Indoor cycling began in 1986 with competitive cyclist Johnny Goldberg. No matter what the weather is, he needed to train cycling continuously as a preparation for the Race Across America. He ended up creating a stationary bike that actually simulated an outdoor cycle. He remarkably benefited from his invention, and so he took his idea to Schwinn (a prominent manufacturing company of bicycles in America), and there the concept of indoor cycling was born.

Advantages of Using Indoor Cycling Bikes

Today, using indoor cycling bikes has become one of the most popular forms of exercise. It is highly effective and enjoyable too. All ages, regardless of the fitness level will find using indoor cycling bikes both challenging and rewarding. It is considered as a low-impact aerobic exercise, it is proven to be highly effective if done regularly and at the same time, and it is gentle on the back. Yes, it is a low-impact activity but it can burn significant amount of calories. That’s why more and more people are getting hooked on indoor cycling bikes.

You can maintain a healthy and active lifestyle by using indoor cycling bikes regularly. Aside from burning calories, indoor cycling is a great way of improving one’s cardiovascular health. In addition, it requires only one type of motion, so here are no complicated moves or choreography to master.

Indoor cycling is also the ideal exercise for building and toning lower body strength. It significantly improves blood flow to your lower body thus increasing your overall leg strength. A strengthened core will help enhance your body alignment and posture.

In many ways, using indoor cycling bikes offer convenience at its best. You don’t have to worry about the weather or location; you can have a good workout in a small space. You can use them anytime you want, night or day. You can even use them while watching TV or reading a book. You can also attend indoor cycling classes with your friends. Overall, you can easily achieve your fitness goals through indoor cycling bikes.

Hit the trail in confidence with the Mongoose Maneuver dual-suspension mountain bike. The Maneuver is equipped with a lightweight, responsive alloy dual- suspension frame that works to give you a smoother overall ride by absorbing harsh bumps. Riders will also dig the 21-speed Shimano shifters and SRAM drive train, which seamlessly switch gears on straightaways or hills. Other details include front and rear alloy linear pull brakes and levers for powerful and reliable braking and an alloy forged three-piece crank set.
About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.
The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).
In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.
In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose’s brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.
Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide

Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:
The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultralightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:

Helmet (this is a must!)
Seat pack
Lock
Hydration pack, or water bottle and bottle cage
Spare tubes
Portable bike pump
Gloves
